Welcome to the Ohio Steampunk Society!
New to Steampunk?
The term Steampunk was first used lightheartedly in April 1987 by American author KW Jeter to describe an emerging literary genre that had the edginess of Cyberpunk but with the style, setting, and technology of the Victorian Era. While the name Steampunk was coined in the late 1980’s, the genre itself dates back to the actual 1800’s with the imaginations of authors such as Jules Verne and HG Wells, and today we have fun and folly with a vision of a future that neverwas.
The Steampunk genre’s style has found its way into books, comics, films, music, art, games, fashion, and other aesthetic expressions, but in the early years of the 21st century all of this began to evolve into organized communities of Steampunk enthusiasts . . . such as the Ohio Steampunk Society and the local groups that meet in Ohio cities.
For those who want to take their appreciation of Steampunk a step further and meet other local enthusiasts, there are many opportunities both online and in person. A primary goal of this site is to facilitate Indiana Steampunks finding each other and making connections; typically the Steampunk Community is a very welcoming crowd and are happy to have new enthusiasts join the group.
Newcomers are often intimidated because they feel that they need a “Steampunk outfit” before they can attend an event or a gathering, but this should not be the case; many seasoned Steampunks are willing to give all sorts of helpful tips on how to create an affordable outfit, or accept no outfit if that’s your preference. The main objective is to meet fellow Steampunk enthusiasts and share the joy that you get from this stylish genre.
Local Steampunk groups often refer to themselves as “Airships,” and tend to be organized by town or city, but some can also be virtual online. A list of active Indiana Airships & Groups can be found HERE, and we are looking to expand the list even more.
